6 months, fixed term position

Job Summary

Over the next four years, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) proposes to elevate the goal of growing our membership and supporters as a top priority for the organization. In the strategic plan, we emphasized a focus on deepening engagement with our members, rather than setting new target numbers. However, because of our analysis that we need to demonstrate significantly greater political influence through the size of our membership, we propose to attract 2 million active members and supporters by 2020. (Two million is 1% of the U.S. adult population.) We will count those activists who take at least six actions in support of our work each year; these could be monthly sustainers who give each month, or an activist who takes more than 6 online actions each year, or a group leader who hosts monthly meetings of their local group.

To facilitate the level of growth that we are seeking, we propose to launch a new membership structure to complement our existing local and student groups. The Human Rights Defenders Team will be a new option for individuals when they sign up with Amnesty; team members will give us information about the issues and strategies they care about, and they will receive opportunities to take action each month on relevant campaigns and other prioritized actions. This structure will help feed those activists who want to do more into our leadership structures or our local groups, expanding the pool for developing new leadership. We will need to staff this new structure so that it is fully integrated with other member support and engagement teams. This position will be responsible for creating the structures needed to run this network as well as enabling the testing to determine the best approach to reach scale.
